Professional Ethics
There was a talk organized on the topic of Professional Ethics for the students of both 1st and 2 nd year MBA. The resource person for the workshop was CA Anwesh Shetty.
CA Anwesh began with introducing himself to the audience and proceeded with the session. He initially gave a few cases to the students and asked them how they would react in case of being in the place of the person in the case. His first case included a patient who was in a critical condition and the hospital policy stated that no patient is to be admitted irrespective of the case seriousness without filling the paperwork required. How would the student react as the hospital staff in such a case?
The second case included a law case, where a criminal comes to a lawyer and accepts that they are guilty in a murder case and asks for his support in court, he agrees to pay the lawyer a high amount of fees in return. He then asked the students on how they would react if they were the lawyer.
The third case was about the income tax penalty where a businessman had been instructed to pay Rs 5 Crores by the income tax department, but the businessman does not have the ability to pay such a high amount. A government employee assured the businessman that he will dispose the tax fine file if he is bribed with Rs 30 Lakhs. What will you do as a businessman in such a case?
Using this situation CA Anwesh Shetty explained to the students that an individual should know when to show moral ethics and when to showcase professional ethics. An individual must in his work, know how to react in a particular situation where he applies professional ethics irrespective of how serious or harsh the situation is.
Example:
In the first case, the hospital staff could have admitted the patient who was in urgent medical need, but it would have been against the professional ethics of the organization.
In the second case, they lawyer can’t confess to the court as it’s against the lawyer book rules to disclose any confidential information that a client has shared with them no matter how wrong it may be or even if their client is guilty for the happening.
In the third case, the businessman does give Rs30 lakhs as bribe in order to avoid falling in financial depth depending on what he felt right in that situation.
