The Manel Srinivas Nayak Institute of Management (MSNIM) hosted an insightful awareness session on Swallowing Difficulties on Saturday. The program featured Ms. Aroline from the Department of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology, KMC Mangalore, as the resource person.
The session focused on the causes, symptoms, and impact of swallowing difficulties, a condition that can affect individuals of all ages, though it is more prevalent among the elderly. Ms. Aroline explained that swallowing difficulties occur when food enters the lungs instead of the stomach, a condition known as aspiration. She highlighted common symptoms such as choking, coughing, and breathlessness, which may be exacerbated by underlying medical conditions like stroke, surgery, or radiation treatments.
Ms. Aroline emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and encouraged individuals to seek support from general physicians, speech-language pathologists, nurses, and other professionals. As social beings, she noted, humans thrive through interaction, and addressing health concerns like dysphagia can significantly improve one's quality of life.
The session concluded with a call to action: recognizing early signs of dysphagia and consulting the appropriate healthcare professionals can lead to timely treatment, reduce complications, and enhance overall health and well-being. This impactful program underscores MSNIM’s commitment to promoting health awareness and education within the community.
